Chen Xiang Temple in Shanghai

This peaceful little monastery located in the western part of the old city of Shanghai is one of my favourite places to visit. It is famous for its Eaglewood statue of Guan Yin Bodhisattva, and it was first built for more than 400 years ago by emperor Wanly! In 1600 Pan Yunduan the owner of Yu Garden got the statue for his mother as he knew she was a Buddhist.

It was rebuilt in 1815 by Emperor Jiaqing by Qing Dynasty. During the Cultural Revolution the monastery was almost destroyed, but the state announced it as one of the places to be kept and it was restored in 1990. In 1996 it was certified as a key national preservation of cultural relics, and today there is a Buddhist College located in the monastery. Address: 29 Chenxiang Pavilion Road, Shanghai
